Competition Juror
David Butler

David Butler brings a wealth of experience in varied areas of the visual arts and museum practice, having worked as a registrar, educator, and administrator in large and small academic and public art museums for nearly 45 years.  His academic training in Italian Renaissance and Baroque art (B.A., M.A. Florida State University; Ph.D., Washington University in St. Louis) has necessarily been supplemented by decades of intensive on-the-job training in museum practice and community development.

He has been an art museum director for the past 30 years, at the Emerson Gallery at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York; the Swope Art Museum in Terre Haute, Indiana; and the Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University.  Since 2006 he has served as executive director of the Knoxville Museum of Art, an institution with deep community roots that celebrates the rich, diverse visual culture of East Tennessee.  David retires from the KMA at the end of December 2023 and is looking forward to spending more time painting in his own studio.
